| McInerney Lifts VMI to 16-15 Lacrosse Victory over Marist in Double Overtime
Senior leads Keydets with five goals including game-winner in season finale. POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – In a game that went back-and-forth and saw VMI never lead until the final score, the Keydets pulled out a thrilling 16-15 win over Marist in double overtime earlier on Saturday in its’ season finale. Senior attackman Leo McInerney (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) scored the game-winning goal when he took a pass from junior attackman Robert Trimble (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) and fired the ball into the back of the net with 2:28 left to play in the second overtime. The victory brought a successful end to the season for VMI which finishes at .500 both overall and in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with 7-7 and 4-4 records. The victory featured junior defender Lee Cook (Centreville. Md./St. Mary's) and sophomore defender Curtis Jacques (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) each scoring the first goal of their careers. McInerney led the Keydets on the day with five goals while Trimble led VMI with seven points on a team-high six assists to go along with one goal. Collier and junior midfielder Tony Cavalero (Annandale, Va./Annandale) added three goals apiece for the Keydets while junior goalkeeper Kelley DeNeen (Novi, Mich./Novi) recorded a 10-save performance including one in the second overtime as he picked up his second win of the season and his career. “Kelley DeNeen came up big in the overtimes making saves,” Bartlett said. |
